Local dogs have small dogs. Small dogs refer to dogs whose weight does not exceed 10 kilograms and whose height is less than 40 cm. There are differences in size and shape between Chinese local dogs in different regions. When the native dog grows up, the shoulder height is about 25-55 cm and the weight is about 10-30 kg.

Chinese pastoral dogs have very similar appearances to early wolf, Chinese wolf, and grassland wolf, with a pointed mouth, short mouth and flat forehead. Most Chinese native dogs live in rural and suburbs of China, and are mostly free-range and account for the majority of native dog breeds.
