Akanji reveals the conversation between Guardiola before he loaned Inter.
Akanji revealed his conversation with Manchester City coach Guardiola before transfer to Inter Milan at a press conference for the Swiss national team. Guardiola made it clear that among the six central defenders, only two can start, two can sit on the bench, and others will have a hard time having a chance. Akanji said it was not good to hear the news because he always expected to play.
When asked why Guardiola put him behind, Akanji replied, "You have to ask him."
The defender admitted that the sudden change was hard to accept, especially after he had settled in Manchester with his family: "It's still hard to realize that I suddenly was no longer a member of the Manchester City family, although I feel like I'm still a part of it. I haven't seen new teammates on Monday in Milan because everything happened so fast and there was no training. My family and I were very comfortable in Manchester and we will definitely miss the life there."
Despite some disappointment, Akanji was looking forward to the new environment. "I'm glad things were finally settled. I really like Inter Milan." He said, "He has a contract with Manchester City until 2027, and Inter's loan agreement includes a £13 million purchase option that could become mandatory in 2026.
However, Akanji did not rule out the possibility of eventually returning to Manchester City, saying: "The fact is that I was loaned to Inter Milan, so it is theoretically possible to return to Manchester."
