The British police previously decided to ban fans of the Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv from attending the away game against Aston Villa in the Europa League in November. TA reported that under pressure from all parties, including the British Prime Minister, the decision has been ordered to be "immediately reviewed."
The ban was initially proposed by West Midlands Police and approved by Birmingham City's Safety Advisory Group. The reason given by the police was based on "current intelligence and past incidents", especially the serious violent clashes that occurred during Maccabi Tel Aviv's away game against Ajax in November last year, when 62 people were arrested and five people were hospitalized. The police made the decision out of safety concerns.
However, this decision quickly triggered a huge backlash. British Prime Minister Starmer called it a "wrong decision" and stressed that police had a responsibility to ensure the safety of all fans. Under intense pressure, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster ordered on Friday that the police and security advisory groups immediately review the "reasonableness and necessity" of the ban.
