Healthy diet and good living habits are very important for bone strength, but a new study finds that although vegetarianism is considered to help prevent various diseases such as cancer, hypertension and diabetes, it may increase the risk of facial fractures in men and women.

Is it better to eat meat than to eat vegetarian food? The study found that vegetarian diets lead to increased risk of fractures in the bones, but the specific cause is not yet clear. Since the results of the study evaluating the impact of vegetarian diet on male bone strength and the scale is still uncertain and small, the University of Leeds team in the UK decided to conduct a large-scale study.

The researchers evaluated 413,914 participants from the British Biobank Project and collected their diet details. Participants were classified as regular meat eaters (eating meat more than 5 times a week), occasional meat eaters (eating meat less than 5 times a week), fish vegetarians (eating fish but not eating meat) and vegetarians (eating dairy products). As a result, it was found that there were 3,503 cases of facial fractures among the participants.

In addition, the study also found that the risk of facial fractures in vegetarians increased by 50%, while the risk of facial fractures in vegetarians was slightly higher than that in regular meat eaters, an increase of 8%.

Experts analyze the causes of vegetarians with low BMI index

The study's lead author James Webster, a doctoral student at the School of Food Science and Nutrition, said that in a society with aging population, a facial fracture can be said to be an increasingly serious problem, and may make the body weaker and affect the quality of life.

However, this study cannot deny the overall health benefits of vegetarian diets, James Vebers said that vegetarian diets may still exceed the risk of lesions, including reducing the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. This study shows that although vegetarians face 50% higher risk of facial fractures than carnivores, only three additional facial fractures per 1,000 people over the past 10 years.

Researchers believe that although vegetarian diets are beneficial, the inability to obtain sufficient protein from foods may be the reason for the decrease in bone strength.

James. According to Vebles, it was also found after analysis that a lower body mass index (BMI) may be a key factor in higher fracture risk. In addition, vegetarians achieve protein intake by about 17% lower than those of carnivorous people. Therefore, the information that this study wants to convey is that vegetarians need to ensure a balanced diet, and the focus is on having enough protein in their diet and maintaining a healthy body mass index (BMI) to help vegetarians maintain healthy bones and muscles.
